Africa's smallest carnivore, the dwarf mongoose, has moved into a new habitat at the zoo.
The new arrivals have been settling into their specially designed habitat that replicates their natural savannah environment. Complete with rocky outcrops, sand pits, grasses and plenty of enrichment activities, the habitat encourages the mongooses to exhibit their natural behaviours, from foraging and hunting to play.
Native to sub-Saharan Africa, dwarf mongooses are the continent's smallest carnivores and are known for their playful nature, curiosity, and strong family bonds. They live in close-knit groups and work together for hunting, grooming, and protecting each other from predators.
“We’re excited to welcome the dwarf mongoose to Fife Zoo. These delightful creatures play a crucial role in their native ecosystems by controlling insect populations and dispersing seeds, and they are equally vital as ambassadors for conservation. They help us educate our visitors about the importance of protecting all African wildlife” Michael Knight, Director of Fife Zoo.
